Make a Holiday Chainmaille Pendant

Last minute news!

YaYa Beads is proud to announce drop-in classes on each of the 1st 3 Saturdays in December - that's December 4, 11, and 16, between 10:30 AM and 3:00 PM.

We will be teaching this cute chainmaille Holiday Tree Pendant, on a drop in basis: no appointment or registration necessary. This class will take approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, and requires no experience. Drop in anytime between 10:30 AM and 3:00PM and ask for the Holiday Tree Class. We'll get you set up right away!

Students will need to provide their own tools: 1 pair of chainnose pliers and 1 pair of bent chainnose pliers. If you do not have these, we have them available for purchase.

We also have available both satin and poly-coated cable finished necklaces to hang your new pendant. These pendants make up quickly and are fantastic gifts - for yourself or for someone special.

Class fee is $35 and includes one chainmaille pendant kit, either in all red ornaments or the multicolor mix. Additional kits will be available for purchase as long as supplies last.

Don't miss out on this opportunity to learn the art of Japanese Chainmaille AND get a great Holiday necklace!

More classes added to schedule

We are already booking classes into next year - make sure to check the class calendar frequently, as it changes frequently as we schedule more and more classes.

You can also click on the "Events" tab on our Facebook page for class details.

Current class schedule:

On Saturday, October 16 @ 10:30 AM we will be offering this chainmaille bracelet class:

This is a fun, and fairly easy bracelet, and looks great in multicolor, but you can also decide to just use a few colors with the silver - like shades of blue, or the school colors of your choice, or just copper with the silver. We have the multicolored bracelet shown above on display in the shop, as well as one in just red and black. Both of these are made with enamelled copper wire. We also have one on display made in various blues, with sterling silver rings instead of enamelled copper rings.

The fee for this class is $35 plus materials; for bracelets made with all enamelled copper rings, the bracelet kit will cost $18.50. If you should prefer to make you bracelet with sterling silver, the fee will vary according to bracelet length, as the sterling is priced by weight. We will have all this information available at the shop when you register.

A $25 non-refundable deposit will be required upon registration ($45 non-refundable deposit if you choose sterling silver rings). At the time of registration, students will need to specify what colors they wish to work with during the class. Registration for this class will end at 6PM on Wednesday, October 13 (that's today!), so that I will have ample time to get everyone's jump rings cut and tumbled prior to class Saturday morning!

On Sunday, November 14 @ 1 PM Daniel will be returning to teach his wire-wrapped pendant class. This is a great class for beginners, or for those wishing to further advance their wire-wrapping techniques. The class project is a wrapped cabochon, and the fee is $35 plus supplies. A $15 non-refundable deposit will be required for registration.

Updates and Changes to the Specialty Class Schedule:

Beaded Beads: Saturday, August 14, 10:30 AM. Ceil has added a few more beaded beads to her repertoire (a total of 3 different types of beaded bead are available for learning); and will be teaching 2 different types per student, time permitting. Ceil is easily able to adapt to different student's stitching skills and speeds, and everyone will get the one-on-one attention they need. So just to clarify - each student can pick 2 of the 3 beads, and you don't all have to pick the same 2.

Samples of all the different beaded bead types available to be taught in this class are on display at the shop. Students should be prepared by 10:30 on the morning of class to tell Ceil what their 1st and 2nd - (everyone may have different choices - Ceil is very flexible!) But the class starts at 10:30, so if you want to examine the different beads designs and start picking out your beads, either come in one day before the class to start making your choices, or get to the shop well before 10:30 that morning, so you can do your picking and choosing! Please don't expect the class or the teacher to wait for you once class begins!

Note: Any student(s) who fall behind on the 1st pattern and isn't ready to progress to the second beaded bead technique may not be able to learn 2 patterns during the class. Please understand that we are basing our time estimates and class project schedule on past class experience, but if someone needs a little extra attention to get going, they may only master one technique during the class.

Introduction to Art Clay Silver: Saturday, August 21, 10:30 AM (this will be the LAST opportunity to take Intro Art Clay Silver until next year - Angela will be building on these skills in some of her more advanced classes for the rest of the year). No kidding folks - last intro class this year. Angie has some terrific advanced classes to offer, and we are moving on!

SEPTEMBER:
Photopolymer Clay
: Saturday, September 11, 10:30 AM. One of Angela's Advanced Art Clay classes, this class will teach you how to make your own stamps. We don't have this project on the YaYa Beads page - Angie hasn't taught it in over 3 years, but everyone loved it the last time she offered it. We also don't have an example in the shop right now, but Angie promises me she will get me one ASAP. But basically, you learn how to design and make your own stamps that you can use on Art Clay projects or in Cold Connections - or I guess even for plain old stamping on paper!

Wire-Wrapped Beaded Bangle Bracelet ("Maggie's Bracelet"): Sunday, September 12, 1PM. This bracelet combines traditional wire-wrapping techniques with beads - and you can use a wide choice of bead sizes and shapes, so be prepared to arrive early for class, so that you can make your selection!

Just 2 of the many variations on Maggie's beaded bangle - one with 4mm copper round beads, one with hand-woven peyote beads.

Woven Wire Bangle Bracelet and Dinner Ring: Friday, Sept 17, 9AM
Kathy will be teaching 2 entirely different projects, both of which involve weaving wire.

This is NOT wire-wrapping - it is wire-weaving.

This class will run from 9AM to 6PM on Friday, September 17.

This class represents a substitute for the previously advertised SEE (Soldered/Epoxied/Embossed) Pendant and Earrings. A few technical difficulties arose with the execution of that project, but we hope to be able to offer it again soon.

Cold Connections: Saturday & Sunday, Sept. 18-19, 9 AM - 6 PM (2-day workshop)

Viking Knit: Monday, September 20, 10:30 AM - 5 PM - this is wire-weaving class, taught by Kathy Morris. There are many, many applications for this technique, but the class project will be a copper bracelet, and you will also learn to make you own starter, so that you can continue to make more Viking Knit once you leave class!

Wire-Wrapped Celtic Necklace AND Celtic Earrings: Sunday, September 26, 1PM

These are 2 different projects, and 2 different techniques - and, obviously, they don't match - but both are Celtic.

OK - that is it for formal class schedule updates at this time. Please call the shop to register, or if you have any questions!

On a related class note, many of you have been asking about beading classes, wrapped loop classes, beadweaving classes, and chainmaille classes. I had hoped to get restarted with these in August, but I still can't talk, so I certainly can't teach yet. I have seen the ENT, and have some nerve damage to my vocal chords, and still need to drastically limit my talking. But YaYa beads is just not able to resume beading, beadweaving, or chainmaille classes until the teacher can talk, so please bear with us. -- Hopefully we will be able to resume these classes by mid-to-late September. Thanks!

Now - I'd like to remind everyone that our "Just Bead It" Studio Project Days started Wednesday, August 4 - we'd love to have you join us!

New Class & Schedule Information

AUGUST:
Wire-Wrapped Rings
: Sunday, August 8, 1PM

The class project is the Pharoah's ring (scroll down to the Hidden Bead Ring Picture - this is very similar to Pharoah's ring; then imagine it with a big shiny faceted Swarovski Rivoli!), with a Swarovski Rivoli crystal as the focal bead - this is a blingy project!

The class project will look very similar to the ring shown here at the right - except that this is a 4-prong setting with a Swarovski Rivoli crystal. Prong settings are difficult for beginners, so Daniel has modified this ring to teach it as a Pharoah's ring, with the same Swarovski Rivoli, so it is easier, but just as stunning.

Beaded Beads: Saturday, August 14, 10:30 AM. Ceil has added a few more beaded beads to her repertoire (and we will soon be added these pictures to the Shop's webpage), and will be teaching 2-3 different types, time permitting. Students who pick up the techniques faster than others will be able to progress a little more rapidly in this class, and will be the ones who may be able to learn the 3rd pattern. Ceil is easily able to adapt to different student's stitching skills and speeds, and everyone will get the one-on-one attention they need.

Samples of all the different beaded bead types available to be taught in this class are on display at the shop. Students should be prepared by 10:30 on the morning of class to tell Ceil what their 1st, 2nd, and possible 3rd choices are for the class - (everyone may have different choices - Ceil is very flexible!) SEE* Pendant & Earrings: Friday, September 17, 10:30 AM - 6PM. SEE stands for Soldered, Epoxied, and Embossed. The SEE pendant/earring technique combines Soldering, Epoxying, and Embossing to create a uniquely individualized design - your finished product will be the result of the various materials you choose to add to your design, which may include glitter, different colors of embossing powder, pieces of metal, and whatever else Kathy has up her sleeve. Plus you choose the shape your pendant and earrings take - and the pendant and earrings certainly don't have to match. And if you don't want earrings, Kathy will let you make 2 pendants instead, because THAT is exactly how flexible she is!!

Cold Connections: Saturday & Sunday, Sept. 18-19, 9 AM - 6 PM (2-day workshop)

Viking Knit: Monday, September 20, 10:30 AM - 5 PM - this is wire-weaving class, taught by Kathy Morris. Just Bead It!

Don't you hate it when you're working on a jewelry project at home, and you're missing a crucial element - like the right clasp, or a couple of beadcaps, or some crystals -- whatever the issue, you have to stop dead in your tracks - thwarted yet again by the bead fairies!

Well, YaYa Beads may have a solution for you: we have started a special weekly event known as "Just Bead It", where beaders can come to the shop on Wednesdays, bring all their stuff, and get set up at a station in the back room - plenty of room to spread out. YaYa will provide a beading mat, a little bucket, and a piece of paper, and you guys can get busy creating. When you find you need something from the shop to keep going, just come on out into the shop, hunt around 'til you find it, and right down the price(s) on your sheet of paper, and just keep going!

Any projects are fine - stringing, weaving, wire-wrapping - whatever you want to work on (but no chemicals, other than jeweler's glue, please). Just remember to bring your own tools! And feel free to bring lunch, snacks, drinks - the refrigerator is there for you use (and a microwave, too) OR you can step out for a lunch break!

We have been beta-testing this for a few weeks, and the participants have been having a great time, as well as getting a lot of projects completed! So you can be productive, and meet some new friends, and you can all share ideas and beading secrets and tips with each other.
YaYa staff is always on hand to help you match colors or find stuff, but "Just Bead It" is NOT a class, so we won't be available to teach you new techniques, or expand on your skills - this is just a great opportunity to have a fully-stocked bead studio at your disposal!
"Just Bead It" will begin as a regular event on Wednesday, August 4, and we hope you'll get the chance to enjoy these opportunities! Remember that we open at 11AM on Wednesdays!

Hope to see you soon!

And always remember to check our calendar for updates to classes, store closings, etc!

Updated store info for June

I will be out of town 6/8 - 6/12, but Bridget will be holding down the fort! Bridget is an experienced beader and beadweaver, and also knows a lot about cold connections and kumihimo, and is terrific at putting colors together, so don't hesitate to ask her anything!

On June 24, I have to have surgery, and Bridget is busy with previous plans of her own that week, so the store will be closed Friday, 6/25 and Saturday, 6/26. Bridget will still be in town on the 24th, and will be manning the shop.

Daniel's wire-wrap class on 6/27 will go on as scheduled, with Kim manning the shop for his class (the shop will be closed to customer traffic, as always on Sundays). I am not sure how long I will be out of work, but if I am not able to return to the shop on Tuesday, 6/29, Bridget will be running things again that week, so it will be business as usual starting 6/29.

I apologize for having to be closed - but life happens, and you just have to roll with it!

And don't forget that the store calendar is always up-to-date with closings, classes, etc.

And check us out on Facebook!

Don't forget to keep checking the store calendar - we keep adding more and more classes!

We have a really unique and interesting opportunity in July. On July 24, we will be offering a full-day, semi-private wire-wrapping seminar, with Daniel Morgan. Daniel will be covering all the basics of wire-work, including tools, and different wire types. He will then lead the students in the creation of 2 separate wire-projects: a wire-wrapped cabochon pendant, and a bracelet.

This workshop is limited to 2 students, and to make things a little more interesting, the first student to sign up for the class gets to pick which bracelet design will be taught that day!

The fee for this workshop is $85 plus supplies. Don't miss out on the chance for a full day with Daniel - he is a fascinating instructor, and knows everything there is to know about wire, and will answer all your wire questions!

And by popular demand, we are offering Intro Art Clay Silver again on August 21. Angela wants to be able to teach more of her advanced classes, so this will most likely be our last Introductory Art Clay class for 2010. A lot of you have asked for this class, so mark your calendars now, and give us a call to get enrolled!

And don't forget all the classes that are just around the corner: Bead Embroidery, Cold Connections, Enameling on Copper, Viking Knit, & Copper Clay.

YaYa Beads is proud to be able to offer such a wide variety of classes, but getting all the dates & the instructor's schedules & the stars to align at the same time if tough - so if you see something that interests you, see if your schedule lines up with ours, because we can't always offer the classes we want to when we want to and when you want us to!

Viking Knit

We can now announce our newest class - Kathy Morris will be teaching Viking Knit on Tuesday, June 22.
detail of Viking Knit
Viking Knit is a gorgeous wire-weaving technique, and presents so many different possibilities.
For Kathy's class, the project will be a copper wire bracelet. Kathy will teach you and easy, fool-proof way to start your Viking knit, as well as teach you how to make your cones by hand from 18 g copper wire (unless you just really want to buy pre-made cones!)

The fee for this Viking Knit class will be $50, and will include absolutely all your supplies (unless you choose pre-made cones and/or clasps). Because Kathy will also be teaching students how to make S-hooks to clasp their finished bracelets with!
You won't want to miss this one - call us or come by to sign up!

Change, Change, Change

There is SO much new stuff going on here - if you haven't been by lately, you don't know what you are missing.

As always, we have lots of exciting classes coming up, and lots of new ones - the Enameling on Copper and the Bead Embroidery are right around the corner!

And I was just got the opportunity to offer a class in Viking Knit - this is a gorgeous wire technique, and I can't get any pics up today, but I will soon. While my preference for offering these speciality classes is to have them on the the Weekends, the Viking Knit class probably going to be taught on a Tuesday, due to the teacher's availability. THIS MAY CHANGE, though - so I will keep this newsletter up-to-date, as well as the calendar.

We have gotten in a lot of new goodies - we now have bead spinners (by popular request), some terrific polyester chain in beautiful colors (yes, I said polyester....you guys won't believe the look and feel of this chain. It is gorgeous!).

And all our books and magazines are always, ALWAYS, 15% off. And we have a lot of new books!

And for all you Facebook folks out there, I have been working hard to create a Facebook page for the shop. This is where you can find us: YaYa Beads on Facebook. I really, really wanted this to be a purely business page, where folks could visit, see what is going on, and view photos, leave comments, etc. However, Facebook doesn't really allow the functionality for a business that I wanted for the store's page, so the shop's Facebook page is now some sort of hybrid business-personal page, that has to link through my personal profile to allow users to see all of our gorgeous photos and to leave comments. So please take the time to check us out on Facebook, and tell the world how great YaYa Beads is!

And if anyone out there is a Facebook guru, and can figure out how I can get photo albums directly on the YaYa page without having to route everyone through my personal Facebook page, stop by the shop and feel free to school me!

New classes!

We are excited to be able to add Copper Clay to our class schedule!

The copper clay product is similar to Art Clay Silver, but since it is copper, it has different chemical properties, and requires different handling and firing, and yields a beautiful copper project. You can use copper clay to make all the same items you can make with Art Clay Silver: pendants, bracelet/necklace links, rings, earrings, etc, at a fraction of the cost incurred with Art Clay Silver.

Angela Foreman will be teaching this class on Saturday, July 10, @ 10:30 AM. Class fee is $65, and includes all supplies.

Don't forget our upcoming Bead Embroidery 2-day Workshop in June (June 5 and June 19) - learn how to make these gorgeous, intricately beaded cuffs!

We have an example of one of these beaded cuffs in the shop -come take a look!

And don't forget that Cold Connections is returning in June (June 18 & 19), as well as our brand new Enameling on Copper Workshop (June 20 and 21)!

Hope to see you soon!

Enameling on Copper

We are pleased to present a brand new workshop at YaYa Beads, taught by Kathy Morris, a versatile and talented instructor from the William Holland Lapidary School:

Enameling on Copper: Sunday & Monday: June 20-21, 9 AM - 6 PM

Workshop fee: $115 (includes all supplies except where noted below).

Come and discover the exciting world of enamels! No special skills are required but a good sense of color helps. This is a busy class - it will teach you the basic techniques of this art. We will be sifting, stenciling and wet packing. The class will also shape and texture the metal and sink wires into the enamel.

Students who bring their own prepared copper pieces to the class will leave the workshop with more finished pieces, but there will also be plenty of time during the workshop to design and create the copper pieces you wish to enamel (NOTE: copper-working will NOT be taught in this class, so prior knowledge of cold connections techniques is mandatory for this enameling workshop!) If you want to prepare your copper ahead of time, please shape, file and get it all ready to enamel.

The class fee will include all enameling supplies but will NOT include any copper that students use to design and create components. Copper will be available for purchase at the time of the class, or you may bring your own.

An example of an enameled copper bracelet, with matching earrings, is shown below:

In addition to enameling, we have a pretty full class schedule over the next few months - take a look at the post immediately below this one to see what's coming up!

Hope to see you soon!

Important reminder, especially to our out of town guests:

We are open during Masters® week! Traffic is not bad at all once you pass the Rhinehart's area on Washington Road or if you are coming from the Evans-Martinez direction. If you are coming from South Carolina, the easiest way to reach YaYa Beads during Masters® is to exit on Riverwatch Parkway, turn right at the bottom of that exit and travel on Riverwatch to Fury's Ferry Road. Turn left on Fury's Ferry, and go one block to the next red light, which is Washington Road. Turn left on Washington Road, and go through one more light, and you will see us immediately ahead on the left.

If you are traveling from the West, well bless your heart! You will exit on Washington Road (exit 199, and turn left. Go about 1/4 mile, and we will be on your right. Traffic will be congested at this exit during peak golf hours (usually until about 11 AM, and then picking up again around 3:30 PM.)

Don't be afraid of Augusta during Masters®! Come see us!
