Our Metalsmithing Workshop is Back!

Saturday, April 18 - Sunday, April 19: METALSMITHING (COLD CONNECTIONS)

This is a terrific, intense 2-day workshop (9AM - 6PM both days) jam-packed with basic Cold Connections techniques, including cutting, sawing, annealing, etching, texturing, patination, and so much more. Students usually create anywhere from 6 to 12 pieces, depending on the size and complexity of the designs they choose. This is a very flexible class - no kits! Everyone makes whatever they choose, with lots of guidance, helpful tips, and hands-on instruction from the workshop leader. The fee for this 2 day workshop is $155 (nonrefundable registration deposit: $65), and includes handout materials, all supplies needed to learn the techniques and to make your pieces, as well as use of tools, etc. The only additional fees would be if you choose to use beads, crystals, etc from the shop as embellishment, or if you want bails, chain, earwires, or other materials to finish off your designs. If you have tools you wish to bring, or interesting found objects - feel free!

For any interested students, we will be offering an optional 3rd day of Metalwork instruction on Monday, April 20. This class is designated as an "independent design day," where students can bring together the techniques they learned the previous 2 days to design and fabricate a piece of their choosing, with help from the workshop leader as needed. (Many samples and pictures are available for inspiration.) More advanced techniques such as fold-forming can be explored, OR interested students can try their hand at kiln enameling. Students can also dig deeper into any previously-learned techniques according to their own lines of interest. This is a terrific opportunity to integrate your brand new metal fabrication skills!

Students with solid prior Cold Connections experience are welcome to register for the Monday Independent

Design Workshop without enrolling in the Sat/Sun 2-day Workshop, but should be aware that this is NOT a refresher course, and no instruction in technique will be available on that day. The workshop leader will be available to provide guidance/consultation about design & fabrication ideas only, except where more advanced techniques (such as fold-forming or enameling) are explored, as discussed in the previous paragraph. The usual cold-connections stations (annealing, etching, pickling, etc) and tools will be available, so it's a great opportunity to put some pieces together without the bother of setting it up and cleaning it up at home!
  
The fee for this optional 3rd day is $75 ($35 non-refundable deposit required for registration). Class fee includes use of all tools, chemicals, enamels, etc - but does NOT include sheet metal or wire. These materials are available for purchase for students who don't have them, or you may bring your own (in the past, students have had plenty of copper left over from the preceding 2-day metal workshop).

New Workshop: Resin Jewelry

Resinate! ICE Resin Jewelry

Let your creativity “resinate” with ICE Resin! Learn how to use found objects, keepsakes, and embellishments to create one-of-a-kind jewelry components. Resin jewelry is an exciting, easy technique that requires NO special tools or equipment. The skills and tips you learn in this class will allow you to be making your own unique resin jewelry at home right away!

The ICE Resin technique requires a minimum 72-hour "cure" time, so this is a 2-part workshop:

On Day 1, students will learn the unique qualities of jewelry-grade ICE Resin, and explore many of its uses in jewelry design. Samples of ICE resin jewelry components will be available for inspiration. The students will design their pendants, then mix and pour the resin. Each student will create 3 pendants in this workshop. ICE resin is a hands-on technique, and can be a little messy, so it is suggested that you dress appropriately!

At the end of Day 1, the pendants will be carefully set aside to allow for the 72-hour curing time.

On Day 2, students will learn clean-up and finishing techniques and complete their designs. If desired, students may purchase satin cord, leather, chain, or other findings needed to turn their new resin pendants into wearable jewelry.

Class fee is $60.00 and includes all supplies.

We have a really unique and interesting opportunity in July. On July 24, we will be offering a full-day, semi-private wire-wrapping seminar, with Daniel Morgan. Daniel will be covering all the basics of wire-work, including tools, and different wire types. He will then lead the students in the creation of 2 separate wire-projects: a wire-wrapped cabochon pendant, and a bracelet.

This workshop is limited to 2 students, and to make things a little more interesting, the first student to sign up for the class gets to pick which bracelet design will be taught that day!

The fee for this workshop is $85 plus supplies. Don't miss out on the chance for a full day with Daniel - he is a fascinating instructor, and knows everything there is to know about wire, and will answer all your wire questions!


And by popular demand, we are offering Intro Art Clay Silver again on August 21. Angela wants to be able to teach more of her advanced classes, so this will most likely be our last Introductory Art Clay class for 2010. A lot of you have asked for this class, so mark your calendars now, and give us a call to get enrolled!

Upcoming events

We are in full holiday swing at YaYa Beads - we have lots of holiday items available for last minute purchases, and the 2009 class schedule has wound down.


Speciality classes will pick up again in January:


Wire-Wrapping:

On Sunday, January 24, (1PM) we will be offering a brand new Wire-Wrap Class here - the Beaded Celtic Necklace. This necklace allows you to combine the beads of your choice with a wire-wrapped Celtic design, and then you have several options to compete the necklace - simple chain mail, a wire-wrapped style of chain, or even bead stringing or bead-weaving. This is a pretty versatile and interesting design, and if time allows, students will also be able to make the matching earrings, at no additional cost (other than materials.) Class fee: $35 plus supplies.


On Sunday, February 7, (1PM) we will again be offering our basic wire-wrapped cabochon pendant class. This is an excellent class for beginning and advanced wire students alike. Class fee: $35 plus supplies.




On Sunday, February 21, (1PM) we will be offering Darlin's set - a matching bracelet, ring, and earrings set that is always a popular class. Because 3 completed projects are completed in this class, it tends to run a little longer than our other Wire classes, and its fee is $45 plus supplies, instead of the usual $35 fee.





Beadwork and Wire-Weaving:


Ceil Thomas had a busy and prosperous 2009, and has asked to take January and February off to recuperate, and she will be starting up classes again in March, with her extremely popular Chunky Beaded Cluster Necklace Class. on March 13 at 10:30 AM. Class Fee: $30 plus supplies.



Art Clay Silver:

Join us on Saturday, January 30, at 10:30 AM for Art Clay Silver Rings! Angie always has new designs and techniques to share, and this promises to be a great class. (Intro Art Clay is a required pre-requisite) Class Fee: $65 (includes all supplies.)


On Saturday, February 20, at 10:30 AM Angie will be offering a completely new class: Paper Clay. This features more of Angie's innovative techniques and ideas, and something completely new for those of you who haven't taken any Art Clay Silver Classes in awhile. (Intro Art Clay is a required pre-requisite) Class Fee: $65 (includes all supplies.)


Kumihimo:









Kathy Morris will returning February 26, to offer Kumihimo, the ancient Japanese art of braiding with beads. This will be an all-day class, from 10:30 AM to 5:30 PM, and the project will be a rope necklace, which the student may chose to finish with a focal bead, or fringed as a lariat, or simply leave unadorned. The fee for this class is $45 plus supplies. All supplies will be available at YaYa Beads, but if you have a favorite focal bead that you have been wondering how to use, feel free to bring it! [$30 deposit required for registration.]


Cold Connections:


Kathy will again be offering her 2-day Cold Connections workshop on Saturday and Sunday, February 27 and 28 (9 Am - 6PM) . Cold Connections is a fascinating MetalWorks process, in which a variety of materials and found objects are attached without the use of glues or soldering. The creative possibilities with Cold Connections are virtually endless – limited only by your imagination.



Kathy has taught this Cold Connections workshop here before, and does not designate projects in advance - she allows each student to design their own projects, and in the past, students have left the workshop with anywhere from 4 to 8 completed projects, plus some works-in-progress they could finish at home later.

Exciting New Workshops!

We have an event-filled weekend of new workshops coming up in December - you won't want to miss out on this rare opportunity!

We are offering 2 exciting new classes, in an intense, information-packed format, both taught by Kathy Morris, a visiting teacher from the William Holland Lapidary School in Young Harris, Georgia, where she has taught a variety of classes since 2003, including Beadweaving, Wire-Wrapping, and Cold Connections. Many of you have already met Kathy; she is a dynamic instructor and an endless source of beading information (ask her how seed beads are made!), and we are anxiously awaiting her upcoming visit!

On Friday, December 11, Kathy will be offering instruction in Kumihimo, the ancient Japanese art of braiding with beads. TOOLS NEEDED for Cold Connections: Chasing hammer, riveting hammer, steel block, metal shears, small ball peen hammer. If you have these tools, please bring them clearly marked with your name. YaYa Beads will also have the necessary tools and materials for use available at the workshop. Additionally, many tools and supplies will also be available for purchase for any interested students. SAFETY GLASSES are strongly recommended, but will not be provided – please make sure you come to class with safety glasses – you can get these at Lowe’s, Walmart, etc.
