May Wire Wrapping Class: Cabochon

Sunday, May 7, 1PM: Wire-wrapping, Cabochon

Wire-Wrapped Cabochons

Ever wondered what to do with those flat-backed "beads" with no holes? This is a good beginner-level wire class, with a lot of instruction about wire types and basic wire-wrapping skills, plus you'll leave class with a beautiful pendant!

Class fee: $45 plus supplies; $25 deposit required for registration. Registration closes at 12 Noon on Friday, May 5.

Just a reminder about our wire classes: Daniel travels a long way to teach these classes, so a minimum of 2 students must register for any class in order to justify Daniel's travel time and expenses. In the event that we fail to have enough students register for a particular class, any registration fees collected for that class will be refunded in full.

Also, Daniel offers private classes here at YaYa Beads for those who want a little more individual attention and don't want to worry about whether enough students will sign up for our group classes. These private classes cost $90 (supplies are extra), and must be paid IN FULL at the time of registration. The student determines which projects will be taught. Depending of the projects chosen, Daniel covers anywhere from 2 to 4 projects in this class (the student will leave the session with a finished project for each lesson). The number of projects varies because some pieces are quicker than others, so more projects can be mastered during class time. Private classes are offered on Sundays (sometimes on Saturdays, depending on Daniel's availability), usually from 10AM to 5PM.

We appreciate your business, and hope to see you soon!

Good News & Bad News! Plus Holiday Closing info

It's Good News & Bad News time ....

The Good News: YaYa Beads now has Long Magatamas and Czech Superduos in stock... YAY!

Superduos have 2 holes, and come in a huge variety of scrumptious colors - this is one of my favorites, Picasso turquoise:

These beads are gorgeous, and I can't wait to try them. The beading magazines and internet are chock full of patterns using these beads (the Superduos are similar to the Twin Beads, except superduos are known for having more uniformity in size and shape than the Twins. The 2 can be used interchangeably, however - but fr those of you who are a bit anal about your beads, YaYa Beads will only be stocking the Superduos.)

When I opened the box this morning, customers actually started grabbing these Superduos right out of the box; I have already sold quite a few tubes, but can always reorder! Plus, 17 new colors are being released next month...!

These are long Magatamas, which are also very popular with the beading magazines right now:

These have a slightly off-set hole, so they are sort of a combination of a drop bead and a lentil - very interesting possibilities!

We received 25 beautiful colors of these this morning, and they are all tubed, hung, and ready & waiting for your next project!

The Bad News: To make room for these new beads, something has to go, so we're discontinuing ALL size 8/0 Delicas AND the gorgeous faceted size 6/0 seed beads (if you've never worked with these faceted 6/0s, you are missing a real treat!) -

These discontinued beads are currently in a huge cardboard box in the middle of the wood work table, all 25% off WHILE THEY LAST. Please help me clear off my work table: Come get some of these discontinued beads while they're still available!

One more bit of Good News/Bad News (depends how you look at it):

The store will be closed Thursday, July 4 - through Saturday, July 6, for Independence Day. (and also closed on Sunday, and Monday, as usual) - we'll reopen Tuesday, July 9, regular hours.

Stock up on beads and supplies now - don't suffer through the long Holiday weekend without beads!!

Summer classes are here!

We have added some new classes to the roster, and brought back some old favorites - expand your skill set, or learn something new!

Tuesday, August 6, 1PM: Beaded Beads

We have taught this beadweaving class before, and it is always a lot of fun - this is NOT the beaded bead you've seen in magazines, where you start with a wooden bead, and bead around it. This beaded bead is completely beadwoven from scratch, and while there are a huge number of different styles of beaded beads, only one will be taught per class, although Sonya will demonstrate and explain how changing your bead size and shape in the pattern will give the bead a whole new look!

All 3 of these beaded beads are the same pattern - simply changing your bead size or shape can dramatically change the overall look of the bead. These beads can easily be incorporated into various beading projects - I can already envision these earrings done in red and green - what cute Holiday earrings!

Class fee: $40 plus supplies ($10 discount on class fee if all supplies are purchased at YaYa Beads). $15 non-refundable deposit required for registration.

Sunday, August 18, 1PM: Woven Wire Bangle

This is a new pattern for us!

 woven wire bangle

Students will learn to braid/weave heavy gauge wire into this fun bangle. More complicated wrapping projects using this simple weave will also be demonstrated

Class fee $45 plus supplies; $15 non-refundable deposit required for registration.

We are experimenting with offering classes on different days; we'd love to hear from interested students about which days of the week are best for classes! We'd also love to hear what techniques you'd like to learn!

Stop by the shop to see our samples in person, or to learn more about these classes.

We hope to see you soon!

New Beads!

Apologies for the following pics - I took them out in the front of the store as I was putting them out, so the lighting is bad, and some are blurry because I didn't bother with the tripod - I had beads to stock! Plus, bead photography is tough - the colors won't cooperate, and sizes are difficult to gauge. But we have some GORGEOUS new beads in stock - these are just a few representative pics:

See what I mean about sizes being difficult to convey in pics?
The top photo shows just a few of the new bright, colorful 6-7mm freshwater pearls, and the bottom pic shows tiny 1mm "seed" pearls, which look huge in the photo!

While we have plenty of the colorful pearls, the strands you see of the seed pearls are all we have .... with wedding and prom season here, we have been getting lots of requests for these seed pearls, but they were a bit pricey at the show, so I only purchased a few. (So if you love that peacock blue color, there is just one strand!)

colorful howlite spacers

colorful howlite butterfly focals

sponge and bamboo coral

agate

agate cylinders - bold colors and patterns

more colorful agate

more agate - this colorful agate was the big thing at the bead show!

top: more agate; bottom: stunning kyanite

focals: gemstone, lampwork, and sea glass

crystal pave crosses; perfect for bracelets. 7 different colors

amber

top: huge amethyst rondelles; bottom: faceted ruby in zoisite

gemstone and wood skulls - variety of sizes and colors

more gemstone focals

This is just a small sample of all the new beads - come in and see all the beautiful new inventory! We also have new metal beads and findings!

Hope to see you soon!

Masters is here again!

It's that time of year again: Masters' Week

YaYa Beads will be open all next week, although we will be making a slight concession because of Masters: we will be opening 15 minutes late (at 10:15 instead of 10:00) on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

This is NOT because of any traffic issues - it is because exit 199 at I-20 is closed for a few hours every morning to "alleviate traffic" - and since that is my preferred way to get to the shop, I'm just going to stay home for a few extra minutes those mornings. I know I could use Riverwatch, but since all the traffic is being funnelled that way because of the closure at Washington Rd., I'd rather just avoid it.

So - we'll be here all week - how about you?

The traffic really and truly is NOT bad on the Stevens Creek side of I-20 during Masters' Week - you can't even tell the golf folks are in town unless you cross under I-20 heading toward the course. So don't fear the roads and the traffic - we are in the clear where the shop is. If you are coming from the downtown area, obviously, you want to avoid Washington Road - just take Riverwatch to Fury's Ferry, turn Left at Fury's Ferry and go one block, then turn Left onto Washington Rd, and you'll be about a block and a half from the shop. Easy!

Coming from other directions - not a problem! Just use your regular route!.

Hope we'll see you next week - we'll be running some special sales all week; different items will be discounted every day. Just check our Facebook page daily for sales info.
Hope to see you soon!

This class builds on the skills learned in the basic pendant class, but beginners will have no problems mastering this technique.

Once all the students have finished their hidden bead ring, Daniel will teach a bonus class - the bird's nest ring (lower pic). This is fun, easy, and quick way to showcase a favorite bead, and a technique you'll enjoy recreating over and over - this ring makes a great gift, too!

And don't forget our big MetalSmithing Workshop Weekend, coming up May 18 - 20!

Gearing up for Summer Classes

Summer's right around the corner, and we have a full schedule of classes on tap, starting next month.

Have you worked with Tila beads yet? These flat, double-drilled seed beads are versatile, and so much fun! We have a nice selection of colors, and on Friday, June 22 will be offering a beadweaving class, teaching how to make Tila flowers, flat floral components that look great as earrings, or can be linked together to make bracelets and necklaces:

Tila flower earrings:

Tila Flower bracelet:

This design uses a combination of peyote and herringbone stitches. Class will start at 10:30 AM, end at 4 PM. Once the flower itself is mastered, the class will concentrate on making more flowers, and then converting them into the desired design (earrings and/or bracelet and/or necklace). Students who master the flower component and feel comfortable assembling the earrings and bracelet on their own need not stay until the end of class! Fee: $35.00 plus supplies (we will be using FireLine, for those wishing to bring their own from home); $15.00 deposit required at registration.

Sunday, July 15, 1PM: Wire-wrapped Rings

This class will focus on the hidden beads ring (upper pic) - a ring which looks different depending on the size and shape of the bead you choose to wrap (If you have a favorite ring set aside at home, and you'd like to use it, bring it to class!). This class builds on the skills learned in the basic pendant class, but beginners will have no problems mastering this technique.

Once all the students have finished their hidden bead ring, Daniel will teach a bonus class - the bird's nest ring (lower pic). This is a fun, easy, and quick way to showcase a favorite bead, and a technique you'll enjoy recreating over and over - this ring makes a great gift, too!

Class fee: $35 plus supplies, $15 deposit required for registration.

Sunday, July 29, 1PM: Wire-wrapped Geometric Bracelet
This is a classic favorite here at YaYa Beads, and elegant wire design that looks great with every outfit! This is a wonderful beginner class, as the basic information about wire and tools is covered thoroughly before students move on to working with the wire.

Class fee: $35 plus supplies, $15 deposit required for registration.

Sunday, August 12, 1PM: Wire-wrapping, Basic Cabochon Pendant - see class description for June 24, (above).

Sunday, August 26, 1PM: Wire-wrapping, Project To Be Announced - we will be scheduling this class later this summer, based on customer requests received at the shop. If there is a particular class you have been wanting to take, now is your chance to see it on the schedule - come see us, and let us know what you'd be interested in taking!

Let us know if you are interested in a resin or cold connections class, or maybe even another type of class, and we'll see what we can do to add it to the schedule!

Hope to see you soon!

This is a terrific, intense 2-day workshop jam-packed with basic Cold Connections techniques, including cutting, sawing, annealing, etching, texturing, patination, and so much more.
