Ring in the New Year with Specialty Classes!

Here is the latest schedule for our upcoming specialty classes, and we hope to be adding even more soon:

Wire-Wrapped Cabochon Pendant: Sunday January 22, 1 PM:

This is our most basic Wire class, with lots of tips and techniques on the different gauges and shapes of wire, the tools, and so much more, plus you'll leave the class with a beautiful pendant. Great class for beginners and for seasoned wire workers wanting to hone their skills.
Class fee: $35 plus supplies, $15 deposit required for registration.

Wire-wrapped Darlin's bracelet: Sunday, February 12, 1 PM:

This is another great beginner-level wire class.
Class fee: $35 plus supplies; $15 deposit required for registration.

Resinate: Creating beautiful resin jewelry; Saturday, February 25, 12 noon

Thanks to the input of the wonderful students who took our inaugural resin class, the instructor has revised this course and can now accomplish the class goals in one day. Each student will learn how to create resin jewelry components from start to finish, and leave the class with (at least) 3 pendants. Resin pieces need to cure for 72 hours prior to finishing, so the clean-up and finishing techniques will be demonstrated in class, and students may then (carefully) take their pieces home to complete the process after they cure.

Class fee: $55 (includes all supplies); $25 deposit required for registration.

Wire-wrapped Teardrop cabochon earrings: Sunday, March 11, 1 PM:

This class build on the skills learned in the cabochon pendant class; this is technically a beginner-level class, and no prerequisite wire skills are required, but because the stones are much smaller than the pendant, some folks find this class a little more difficult when first starting out.

Class fee: $35 plus supplies; $15 deposit required for registration.

Hope to see you soon!

Holiday Beads and Classes

The holidays will be here before you know it, and we have beads and components that can be used in a variety of ways to make beautiful holiday gifts, or treats for yourself!

These are examples of holiday earrings made with Swarovski crystal components. We have all of the components shown in this picture, as well as others that can be turned into great gift ideas.

These ceramic beads have been extremely popular here at YaYa Beads, but for some reason the vendor decided to discontinue this line in approximately August of 2010. We have luckily just placed at large order for these beads, and this year we have a very limited selection left - just the ones that didn't sell out last season. So if you like these little ceramic figures, come on in before your favorites sell out, because we cannot order an more!

This picture shows a holiday version of the combination peyote/herringbone triangle pattern. This is a class that we teach one-on-one, Tuesday through Friday only, all year round; during the class we cover the weaving of the pendant only, and give instructions on how to turn the pendant pattern into the matching earrings. This pattern looks great in many different color combinations, and would make thoughtful gifts for someone special. This pattern is for experienced beadweavers only, and if you would like to learn this design, please call or come by to book your appointment. You do NOT have to use the red & green color combo, though you certainly may if you choose to.

This is a close-up of the chainmaille holiday pendant. We have squeezed this class into our already full class calendar, and will be offering it on Saturday, November 19, 1PM - 4PM. Class fee is $35 and includes materials to create one pendant. Additional kits will be available for purchase. Students will be responsible for supplying their own tools: one pair of chainnose pliers & one pair of bent chainnose pliers (we have these available for purchase if you don't already own these handy tools!)

More classes squeezed into our schedule before the Holidays! Lots of chances to make some beautiful jewelry for yourself, or to give as gifts!

Resinate! ICE Resin Jewelry Pendants (2-day workshop)

Saturday, October 22, 1PM
Saturday, October 29, 1PM

Fee for Resin Pendant Workshop is $60 and includes all supplies. $25 registration fee. Students will make 3 pendants in this workshop!

SUPER Cold Connections Extravaganza!
November 11, 12, 13, and 14; 9AM - 6PM
Read entire post to learn about discounted registration fees...

We are going to have a 4-day Cold Connections Blowout with Kathy Morris, who returns to YaYa Beads from the William Holland Lapidary School. The first 2 days will be the basic Cold Connections Workshop, and then the 3rd and 4th days will build on these skills. Students may take any or all of these classes - you do NOT have to sign up for all 4 days (but you'll be sorry if you don't!)

Basic Cold Connections on Friday & Saturday, November 11-12. This is a terrific, intense 2 day workshop on Cold Connections techniques, including cutting, sawing, annealing etching, texturing, and so much more. Students usually create anywhere from 5 to 12 pieces, depending on the size and complexity of the designs they choose. This is a very flexible class - no kits! Everyone makes whatever they choose, with lots of guidance and instruction from Kathy. The fee for this 2 day workshop is $130 (registration deposit: $65), and includes all supplies needed to learn the techniques and to make your pieces, as well as use of tools, etc. The only additional fees would be if you choose to use beads, crystals, etc from the shop as embellishment, or if you want bails, chain, earwires, or other materials to finish off your designs. If you have tools you wish to bring, or interesting found objects texturing implements - feel free!

On Sunday, November 13, Kathy will move on to enameling - this is a great addition to your cold connections skills, so prior cold connections experience IS a prerequisite, but you don't have to have taken it here! As long as you have taken it somewhere, you are welcome to learn how to enamel on copper in this class. Fee for this class is $55 (deposit: $35) and includes all materials except your metal. You may bring your own, pre-prepped copper pieces for enameling; you may bring your own sheet copper and prepare it during class, or we will have sheet copper available for purchase. The fee also includes all use of tools you may need although you may wish to bring your own tools, too.

This enameled copper bracelet and earring set was made in one of Kathy's prior one-day enameling workshops - and these weren't the only projects the student completed that day. If you work hard, this can be a very prolific class for you (especially if you prepare your copper pieces ahead of class!), as well as fun and educational.

On Monday, November 14, Kathy is again building on your cold connections skills, this time with a fairly new, exciting technique: alcohol ink. This is another wonderful way to add color to your cold connections designs, but with the torch/kiln required for enameling. Class fee: $55 (registration deposit: $35) includes all materials except your metal. You may bring your own, pre-prepped metal pieces (brass &/or copper); you may bring your own sheet copper &/or brass and prepare it during class, or we will have sheet copper/brass available for purchase. The fee also includes all use of tools you may need although you may wish to bring your own tools, too.

Prior cold connections experience is a prerequisite!

3 projects made with alcohol ink on metal:

**Please note: Registration fees are discounted for students that sign up for 3 or more days of classes this weekend and pay entire registration fee in advance:

3-day packages:

  • 2 Day Cold Connections Workshop + Enameling: $175 ($10 savings)

  • 2 Day Cold Connections Workshop + Alcohol Ink on Metal: $175 ($10 savings)

All 4 days: Cold Connections + Enameling + Alcohol Ink on Metal: $225 ($15 saving)
Wire-Wrapped Pendant (Cabochon): Sunday, November 20, 1PM

Great class for beginners and seasoned wire-wrappers as well. Class fee is $35 plus supplies; $15 registration deposit. This will be our lass formal class before the Holiday Season, so if you have always wanted to learn wire, why not now? Plenty of time left to make some beautiful wrapped cabochons as holiday gifts!

Call the shop to register for classes, or come on by - we'd love to see you!

New Workshop: Resin Jewelry

Resinate! ICE Resin Jewelry

Saturday, October 22, 1PM
Saturday, October 29, 1PM

Let your creativity “resinate” with ICE Resin! Learn how to use found objects, keepsakes, and embellishments to create one-of-a-kind jewelry components. Resin jewelry is an exciting, easy technique that requires NO special tools or equipment. The skills and tips you learn in this class will allow you to be making your own unique resin jewelry at home right away!

The ICE Resin technique requires a minimum 72-hour "cure" time, so this is a 2-part workshop:

On Day 1, students will learn the unique qualities of jewelry-grade ICE Resin, and explore many of its uses in jewelry design. Samples of ICE resin jewelry components will be available for inspiration. The students will design their pendants, then mix and pour the resin. Each student will create 3 pendants in this workshop. ICE resin is a hands-on technique, and can be a little messy, so it is suggested that you dress appropriately!

At the end of Day 1, the pendants will be carefully set aside to allow for the 72-hour curing time.

On Day 2, students will learn clean-up and finishing techniques and complete their designs. If desired, students may purchase satin cord, leather, chain, or other findings needed to turn their new resin pendants into wearable jewelry.

Class fee is $60.00 and includes all supplies.

Lots of different wire technique going on here; you will leave class with 3 different projects, and lots of new skills!

Wire-Wrapped Square Knot Bracelet: Saturday, August 27, 1PM - 5:00PM

This is a good beginner level Wire Class, and makes a bracelet that is also popular with the guys. Please note that heavier gauge wire is used, so hand strength plays a role in your ability to complete the project. Fee: $35 plus supplies.

Wire-Wrapped Geometric Bracelet (with optional addition of beads): Saturday, September 17, 1PM - 5:00PM

Wire-Wrapped Darlin's Bracelet and Matching Ring: Sunday, September 25, 1PM - 6:00PM

Another beginner level Wire Class; 2 projects will be taught(the matching bracelet and ring) and instructions will be handed out for the matching earrings, which students will be able to complete on their own with the skills learned in this class.

Faceted ("3-cut") size 6 seed beads are here! And MORE!

And they are gorgeous. Mere words cannot describe them, so I won't even try.

But if you have seen the June/July 2001 Super Beadwork, this project is featured on page 40:

The pattern in the magazine is for a kumihimo bracelet, with the kumihimo rope created with these faceted (3-cut) Czech size 6 seed beads. The ones featured in the magazine are a wonderful, bright, rainbow mix which will go with almost any outfit, but these fascinating beads come in many gorgeous, Picasso-finished colors

These faceted seed beads are described as unusual and difficult to create, involving a 3 step process where the beads are first faceted with 3 cuts, yielding a 3-sided bead, essentially; then sent to a different company to receive their Picasso finish; and then sent to yet another company to be fire-polished. Whew!

No wonder they are so hard to find -- but YaYa Beads found them, and we have 6 beautiful colors to choose from, including the rainbow mix featured in the Super Beadwork article. But we have extremely limited quantities, and only 6 copies of the Super Beadwork issue left.

While the project in the magazine is Kumihimo, these beads would be ideal for so many techniques - bead crochet, right angle weave, peyote, stringing - just about anything you can dream up.

In addition to these brand new faceted seed beads, we have been to the bead show, and have hundreds and hundreds of strands of new gemstones and pearls, and new focal gemstones, new lampwork, new cabochons, and so much more.

So come on down and take a look!

And remember to check us out on Facebook - we update our Facebook page more frequently than this blog (because Facebook is fast and easy!), and also have run several "instant sales" through FB, so don't miss out! Go to our Facebook page, click "Like", and start receiving the latest updates as soon as they happen!

Hope to see you soon!

Last minute change to workshop schedule next weekend

We originally had planned to offer Viking Knit on Monday, March 21, but due to popular demand, Kathy will instead be teaching Kumihimo, the ancient Japanese art of braiding with beads. This will be an all-day class, from 1 PM to 6:00 PM, and the project will be a rope necklace, which the student may chose to finish with a focal bead, or fringed as a lariat, or simply leave unadorned. The fee for this class is $45 plus supplies. All supplies will be available at YaYa Beads, but if you have a favorite focal bead that you have been wondering how to use, feel free to bring it! [$30 deposit required for registration.]

Here are a few pics of projects created with Kumihimo:

There is still room in this class (as well as in SilverSmithing and Cold Connections), so give us a call if you're interested

New class schedule

We have updated the class schedule:

Saturday, February 5, 10:30AM: Chainmaille: Copper European 4-in-1 Bracelet
This is an extremely versatile weave with many variations.

Class fee is $35 plus supplies; $25 non-refundable deposit required for registration.

Saturday, February 19 (Part 1) AND Saturday, March 5: Corrugated Color Ribbon Cuff; 10:30 - 4PM (both days). YaYa Beads is pleased to be able to offer instruction in this beautiful peyote cuff, designed by Carol Dean Sharpe. This is a time-consuming project, but well worth it! Knowledge of basic even-count flat peyote stitch is a necessary prerequisite for this 2-day class, as peyote itself will NOT be taught during the class*. Students will be introduced to the pattern, and at the end of Day 1 are not expected to be finished with the bracelet itself, so will have 2 weeks to finish the stitching at home, and then Day 2 will be devoted to finishing the cuff.
